Detroit 2009: Audi Sportback concept, coming soon as the A7

Audi continues to underscore the importance of the US market to its future fortunes with two world debuts at the Detroit Auto Show. In addition to the R8 V10 that we saw last month, we got our first look at the Sportback concept. The Sportback is a preview of the A7 sedan due to arrive in the next year or so. As expected, this is Audi’s take on the four door coupe/sedan idiom. Compared to the Porsche Panamera, this is one actually works. It takes the look we’ve come to expect from Audi and updates it with slightly sharper lines and a reshaped grille, along with even more LED lighting.

The Sportback name refers to the fastback roofline and Audi boss Rupert Stadler made it clear that the new look will become a common trait in the Audi lineup, beginning with a new A5 Sportback coming later this year. Under the hood, the Sportback gets a 3.0-liter TDI diesel V6 with 225 hp/406 lb-ft paired up with a seven-speed S-Tronic dual clutch gea box. The whole thing is topped off with automatic start stop to give a combined 39 mpg (US). Based on these specs we can’t wait for the A7 to arrive.

    DOA: Droptop CTS Coupe

    DOA: Droptop CTS Coupe

We’re all fidgety waiting for the arrival of the Cadillac CTS coupe, but GM has already axed a potentially popular variant of the two door entry-Caddy. Despite indications that GM’s turnaround plan is making headway, resources still need to be allocated carefully, so we’re guessing that an alfresco CTS Coupe didn’t make a good enough business case to justify the cost to bring it to market. While it certainly cost GM money to make the CTS a two-door, significant investment would have been necessary to engineer and fine-tune the reported retractable hardtop the convertible would have gotten. Convertible buyers are often a little different than hardcore coupe purchasers, opening up another sales niche. GM also misses out on another challenge to BMW, which offers a Skyliner-ized 3-series. If there’s enough clamor for a convertible CTS Coupe, GM may eventually commit to it as Cadillac takes aim at BMW with it’s awesomeized CTS.

    redesign the Scion Hako

    redesign the Scion Hako

The Scion Hako is one of the ugliest concept cars any of us have ever seen. Seriously, in New York, our watches stopped working in its presence. At the vehicle’s introduction, Scion called its orange-hued affront to the senses a “sporty version of a box” — a turn of phrase we’re still trying to wrap our brains around. What’s next? Record execs selling us the “easy-listening version of Slayer”? But we digress.

Our friends at Jalopnik were equally uninspired by Hako, so they asked their readers to build a better concept using the magic of Photoshop. They have winnowed down the entrants to a group of five finalists — a mail truck (above), a better coupe (shown at right), a hot rod, a Hako-mino, and a Deora-ish pickup. Follow the jump to see the latter three and then head over to Jalopnik to vote for your favorite. The winning ‘chopper will be announced tomorrow. His or her prize?

Renault Alpine coming in 2010 with midship turbo-power

    Sunday, November 25th, 2007

    Renault Alpine

Renault hasn’t done much to tap into its Formula One successes, nor has it provided credible competition to the RX-8s and 350Zs of the world. That’s all going to change come 2010. Renault is expected to revive the much-loved Alpine name and slap it on the back of two-door coupe powered by a turbocharged engine mounted amidships. AutoExpress has it on good authority that designers are wrapping up the exterior and that a Megane-bodied mule caught testing on the Nurburgring is actually the new Alpine being put through its paces. Renault is confident that the new coupe won’t go the way of the Sport Spider that was dropped in 1997 after it was maligned for offering little refinement and even less practicality. We’re hoping to see the Alpine make its concept debut in Paris next year.

    Nissan Skyline
     Nissan Skyline.

It finally sank in a while back that Skyline and GT-R are now two exclusive entities unto themselves. As such, Nissan has just unveiled its newest version of the Skyline to its domestic market, which is essentially the Infiniti G37 here in the States, but with an additional three horsepower, Nissan’s new pop-up engine hood technology and a blind-spot monitor system.

The V36 Skyline comes with the VQ37VHR V6 engine, mated to either a six-speed manual or an electronic five-speed auto ‘box that employs “Adaptive Shift Control,” revising shifts dependent on driving style and environmental situations.

Four flavors of Skyline are available to Japanese consumers — the 370GT, Type-P, Type-S and Type SP - all ranging in price and options.

We’ve posted Nissan’s full press release after the jump for all you JDM OCD types, and there’s a gallery below for your viewing enjoyment.
