As if classic car fans in California weren't spoiled enough with the annual festivities in Monterey, world-class concours in Palm Springs, La Jolla, Dana Point, Palos Verdes, and Pasadena, and first-rate museums like The Petersen and Nethercutt Collection, another incredible collection is being opened to the public this spring. Set to open April 15 in Oxnard, California, the Mullin Automotive Museum is the anchored by the vehicles of Pebble Beach-winner and Monterey Historics racer Peter Mullin, and promises to be another must-see attraction.

According to the press release you'll find after the jump, "the Mullin Automotive Museum will pay homage to the art deco and machine age design eras (1918-1941) that produced exquisite art and magnificent automobiles." The centerpiece will be a huge collection of unrestored Bugattis, but expect to find other iconic brands like Delahaye, Delage, Talbot-Lago, Voisin and Hispano-Suiza, with an emphasis on French cars with coachwork by masters like Chapron, Figoni et Falaschi, Gangloff, Vanvooren, Labourdette, Letourneur et Marchand and Saoutchik among others.

The museum will also feature art and furniture from that era and an entire floor devoted to "Club Bugatti." Besides being home to 100 of the most gorgeous flowing designs of all time, the Mullin will also house some less beautiful but equally significant vehicles including 30 unrestored cars and a whole roster of Grand Prix and Le Mans cars. So if you're in the area, be sure to stop by. Until then, follow the jump for the full press release.

There's no doubt that the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport is an impressive car just from looking at it, and it's even easier to sing its praises when you get to drive it. Bugatti has given us one more reason to be impressed here at the Geneva Motor Show with a cutaway version of its $1.2 million supercar. The car is divided into its two main sub-assemblies, showing off its carbon fiber structure and internal components.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about the car is how Bugatti managed to cram so much into so small a space. The Grand Sport is a relatively small car, and fitting an 8.0-liter W16 engine complete with four turbochargers into the space behind the rear seats was no small feat. The display shows just how Bugatti did it, though, and we walked away even more amazed at what went into packaging all the components of the car. You can see for yourself in the high-res gallery below.

Over the past few years Bugatti has released numerous versions of its Veyron supercar, but the Grand Sport model hasn't been out enough to get too many variations. Bugatti released the Sang Bleu version this past summer in Monterey, but that's about it. In addition to the the pair of Grand Sports we drove, those are the only color combinations we've seen for the drop-top Bugatti.

That is, of course, until we hit the show floor here in Geneva. Bugatti has brought out a brand new Grand Sport finished in carbon fiber covered in clearcoat and polished aluminum. Other than the wheels, which we're not huge fans of, the car is completely stunning to look at. If we somehow had the cash to buy and maintain a Bugatti, the carbon fiber finish would be the first option we would check off. You can see all of our live photos of the car in the high-res gallery below. And try to keep the drool from puddling on your keyboard.

  • Robb Report dubs Mercedes SLS AMG 2010 Car of the Year, Bugatti Veyron Car of the Decade -

Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Bugatti, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury

The time has come for luxury mag Robb Report to issue its latest Car of the Year. Being that the end of 2009 also marks the end of a tidy little decade, the editors at the magazine took the opportunity to bestow one important car with the title Car of the Decade - the first time in the 17 years that Robb Report has been handing out automotive awards that it's granted two in one year. So, who won?

First up is the Car of the Year, which goes out to the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. In taking the award, the SLS AMG beat out 11 other worthy contenders to the throne. Certainly not a terrible choice by any means, though this particular writer has yet to find himself lodged behind the Gullwing's leather-wrapped steering wheel. Moving on, then.

    Robb Report's
Car of the Decade trophy has been awarded to the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport. A good choice? Click here to refresh your memory on what it's like to pilot a $2,000,000 drop-top cruise missile. Yeah, as good a choice as any, we'd say. Click past the break to read more commentary from the magazine and click here to visit the new RobbReport.tv, where you'll see a series of videos recorded during the crew's testing in Napa Valley. Official press release after the jump, high-res galleries below.

    Bugatti Veyron w/ Transporter
2007 Bugatti Veyron with matching Mercedes Atego transporter - Click above for image gallery

We never thought we'd see the day when someone would have to sweeten the deal to sell a car as eminently desirable as a Bugatti Veyron. But with the economy still putt-putting its way down the road to recovery, there are plenty of wealthy collectors looking to free up some liquid assets. That means a buyer's market, so we wouldn't be surprised to see everything this side of the proverbial kitchen sink thrown in to seal the deal.

This, however, looks far more enticing than a porcelain fixture. The owner of this Veyron - monochromatically decked out in French Racing Blue - apparently had this Mercedes-Benz Atego transporter painted to match. As you can see from the photo, the truck's precious-cargo box tilts back and a ramp slides out to get the supercar in with a minimum of fuss.

Oh, and the Bugatti itself? It's a 2007 model with 7,728 kilometers (4,800 miles) on the odometer, a matching dark blue interior and, together with the matching truck, is up for grabs on JamesList from the Netherlands with a €895,000 ($1,264,815) price tag.

Fall 2009 was supposed to be the next golden age of the racing game, with the genre's two heavy hitters - Forza Motorsport 3 and Gran Turismo 5 - scheduled for release. While Xbox 360 owners were rewarded with an incredibly good Forza 3, several delays of GT5 wrecked the plans of many a Playstation 3 owner, this writer included.

But since we were hell-bent on a new racing game, the decision was made to take a chance on another new racing game that was receiving some good press: Need for Speed Shift. We've spent the last two months playing Shift on PS3 to keep ourselves busy until GT5 is finally released. Were we disappointed or pleasantly surprised with the dark horse of the racing game pack? Hit the jump to find out.

  • Video: Jay Leno's Garage welcomes Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport -

Jay Leno holding court in his personal Bugatti museum - click above to watch the video

Remember last week's Conan O'Brien stunt where he decided that the best way to get even with NBC for forcing him out of his dream job was to create insanely expensive bits? He dressed a Bugatti Veyron up as a mouse and played some heavily copywritten Rolling Stones. Total purported price tag: $1.5 million dollars.

But see, Conan's not really a car guy. A real car guy would have known that if the plan was to soak NBC for as much green as possible, some plain-old closed top Veyron ain't going to cut it. A real car guy would have got his hands on the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport and its staggering $2.25 million asking price. Have you met Jay Leno?

That's right, the once and future king of late night television gets his denim-clad paws all over Bugattis' latest and greatest. And - being Jay Leno - he talks about the Grand Sport in the Bugatti wing of his Big Dog Garage. Literally, the Bugatti wing. Jay is also joined by Bugatti's North American Marketing Manager John Hill as well as Veyron hot shoe and former F1 driver Pierre-Henri Raphanel. The latter of which takes Jay for a little ride (ahem) around the quiet streets of Burbank.

For his part, Jay seems extra giddy during this week's episode, as if the Veyron Grand Sport and its removable top have actually tickled and excited him. True, Jay makes a couple of verbal typos, like saying that the Veyron's W16 engine displaces 16.4-liters (it displaces 8.0-liters), but we can forgive him. After all, how cool, calm and composed would you be standing next to a roadster that can hit 253 mph? (That's with the top on, the Grand Sport can "only" hit 217 mph sans roof). Make the jump to watch the video.

Conan's Bugatti Veyron mouse - Click above to watch video

You might have heard about a little, but very expensive, storm in a teacup involving NBC, Conan O'Brien and Jay Leno. A quick summary for those of you doing other things with your lives, Jay left The Tonight Show to do a 10PM show, and Conan took over The Tonight Show. Seven months later, Jay's show isn't working out for NBC, so Jay gets to go back to late night TV, and NBC tells Conan he can push the The Tonight Show back a half hour, or he can walk.

So Conan's walking. But before he does he's going to spend all the NBC money he can, saying, "We're going to introduce comedy bits that aren't so much funny as they are crazy expensive." Hence the Bugatti Veryon mouse. And its really expensive theme music. Follow the jump to watch the video. Thanks to all who sent this in!

He sat in again with Chris, Sam and Dan for Episode #162 of the Autoblog Podcast, and there was much rejoicing. First up, Ed Whitacre's somewhat inscrutable claims about the Chevrolet Volt's pricing and profitability. Staying with talk of prices, we move on to mooted pricing figures for the 2011 Ford Mustang. Staying in Dearborn, we touch on the likelihood that a version of the Ford F-150 will replace the severely aged Ford Ranger. Adding some spice, we head to the Mediterranean to discuss Ferrari 458 Italia pricing, and stay on the Continent to consider Bugatti Veyron operating costs. Updates round it out, with the updated-for-2011 BMW 3 Series and SMax/Galaxy tweaks bookending some talk of the just-unveiled 2011 Shelby GT350. We wrap it all up with some of your questions and tie a bow on it at an hour-and-a-half. See you next week!

Bugatti Pen by Ferrari da Varese - Click above or below-right for high-res image gallery

If you're going to sign a check for seven figures, you're not going to use just any old Bic ballpoint, are you? Of course not. For just such an occasion, Bugatti has commissioned Ferrari to make them a suitable writing instrument.

Well, sort of. This Bugatti pen is made by a company called Ferrari da Varese, which, to our knowledge, doesn't have any ties to the eponymous purveyor of sportscars from Maranello. Call it a coincidence then, but don't dare call it a knock-off. The Bugatti Type A pen from Ferrari da Varese is designed by Luigi Trenti, crafted from aluminum and plated in nickel, then sterling silver, then palladium and finally platinum, for an unrivaled luster. The nib is made from rhodium-coated 18kt gold, complimented by a sapphire glass window and a lacquered black embossed Bugatti logo.

The 16-cm-long pen weighs a solid 95 grams and just for good measure, it comes in a leather and aluminum box. Which is a good thing, because each of the 499 fountain and 499 roller-ball pens cost a very car-like $15,000. Have a closer look in the gallery below.

  • Bugatti Veyron operating costs so expensive, it's cheaper to use a private jet? -

    Buggati Veyron Grand Sport
Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport - Click above for high-res image gallery

There are frightening bills, horrific bills, and Bugatti Veyron bills. The legendarily expensive to buy, it seems that the Veyron is equally expensive to keep running, with some pegging yearly running costs at $300,000. It's so expensive, in fact, that Autocar says there's an owner who trailers his car to a particular driving route, then follows behind in a private jet.

o_Expensive_It_s_Cheaper_To_Use_Private_Jet'; Let's just take the tires, for example: in the U.S., the Michelin Pilot Sport 2s fashioned with the Veyron's unique compound cost about $30,000; in the UK they're £23,500 ($38,216 U.S.). Bugatti recommends you change them every 4,000 kilometers, or 2,500 miles, and at every ten thousand miles the company recommends changing the wheels and tires, which runs north of $50,000.

In between those wheel changes will be things like routine maintenance, with a major annual service setting you back about $20,000. None of this is particularly unexpected so long as you remember the Veyron is more a roadgoing Space Shuttle than a car. And we won't even begin to talk about how expensive pelican insurance has become...

You didn't really think it was over, did you? The Sang Bleu was supposed to be the last special edition Bugatti Veyron, but word (and pictures) on the street suggest otherwise. Exhibit Z: the Grand Sport Blanc Noir edition, which follows the trio of Dubai specials into the Veyron special sunset.

Apparently created for a high-end clothier, the Veyron Blanc Noir appears to be a one-off (like the Pegaso) rather than a limited-production run (like the Fbg par Hermes). Based on the targa-roofed Grand Sport, the Black Noir edition - spotted in California - is all done up, as the name suggests, in black and white: a matte white body with glossy black hood, wheels, spoiler, fuel filler cap and more. And of course, there's the requisite nameplate on the lower front corner of the door. Check it out in the gallery below for all the angles.

1999 Bugatti Veyron design proposal by Walter de'Silva - Click above for image gallery

The car you see here is not the latest special edition Bugatti Veyron, nor is it a Chinese knockoff of the extreme hypercar. It is in fact a 1999 Bugatti Veyron design concept built by then-SEAT head of design, Walter de'Silva. It seems Walter was asked to submit a design concept by then-head of Volkswagen Design, Hartmut Warkuss. Word came that VW head honcho Ferdinand Piëch was working on the revival of the Bugatti brand and he needed some proposals. This full-scale mockup was built and presented, but ultimately rejected in favor of Hartmut's own design. Thank goodness.

The de'Silva concept car languished in some dark corner until Quattroruote uncovered it and printed a spread on the car in August. Scans of that article have found their way onto the interwebs and ultimately into our own grubby little hands so we could share them with you. While there are some similarities between the de'Silva concept and the production Veyron, we're glad VAG decided to go with the Warkuss design. Based on the Giugiaro-styled Chiron 18.3, the Veyron ultimately looked much more sophisticated and elegant. Still, this concept lives on as a footnote in the long story of the world's most outrageous supercar.

Bugatti Galibier concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

The question of whether or not Volkswagen will decide to put the Bugatti 16C Galibier into production is still unanswered. While we've heard rumors that the German automaker was leaning towards the affirmative, the green light has yet to be lit.

Still, Bugatti is making sure all of its ducks are in a row... just in case. Evidence of such can be seen in a trademark filing with the World Intellectual Property Organization that seeks to keep other automakers from stealing the car's design and shape. After all, it's happened before.

With Veyron production scheduled to come to an end after the 2012 model year, Bugatti only has a little bit of time to decide if it's moving forward on that supercar's successor, and if so, whether or not the front-engine, four-door Galibier is the direction it needs to go. We should know soon enough.

Bugatti at the 2009 Dubai Motor Show - Click above for high-res image gallery

As with any other business, in the automotive sphere, it's mission critical to recognize on which side your bread is buttered - particularly in lean times like these. Bugatti may be losing money on each Veyron it builds, but that doesn't mean that company strategists don't know how to earn a crust. Need proof? This month's Dubai Motor Show finds the supercar builder unveiling a trio of special edition models in one of its most important markets.

The Middle East triumvirate will consist of the Veyron Nocturne, which features "galvanized side windows" that add continuity to the polished aluminum body panel accents, and there are also polished wheels and a "black nanocoated magnesium dashboard" with a center console rendered in galvanized platinum. Just five examples will be built.

Bugatti will also show its Veyron "Sang d'Argent" and a topless Grand Sport "Soliel de Nuit" model for those that like a little sun and sand in their hair. The former of which employs a silver metallic finish and alloys nicked from the Grand Sport and the latter incorporates "country coded" colors that include a silver metallic lower and an impossibly deep upper blue finish and a Havanna interior with quilted seats.

If you're interested, well, have your accountant's accountant ring up Bugatti, and summon your garage keeper to ensure you've got some extra room available in the first quarter of 2010 for when you take delivery. Oh, and you'll have to liberate anywhere from 1.45 million euro ($2.1M USD) to 1.65 million euro ($2.5M) from your chaise lounge cushions for the privilege. Not up for it? Well, you can at least check out our high-res images below and the official press release after the jump.

Frankfurt 2007: the shiny, invisible Bugatti Pur Sang

There was an official release of the all-aluminum Bugatti Pur Sang somewhere in Frankfurt this week, but it wasn’t at the official Frankfurt Auto Show. In fact, once it was shown — presumably, once — it wasn’t seen again. Not much of a loss, really, because you won’t be likely to see one either: Bugatti’s only making five of them. That’s even more exclusive than the edtion-of-twenty Lamborghini Reventon.

The Pur Sang is a standard-issue Bugatti stripped of all of its paint. That means raw aluminum and carbon fiber face the 200+ MPH elements in their naked states. We don’t know how it looks in person, but in pics we’d have to say it’s the prettiest Bugatti we’ve seen. Without the two-tone paint job, the car doesn’t remind us of a giant Stacy Adams shoe. It’s also a couple hundred pounds lighter, not that you were looking to shave weight or tenths off the car.

And heaven only knows how Bugatti will decide who gets the five examples. But of course, if you really wanted one you can always stop by Earl Scheib and have your Bugatti stripped. Since it only costs $99 to put paint on a car, it’s probably not much more to take it off. Just an idea. In the mean time, be sure to check out the hi-res gallery of pics.
