Arden AJ18 - Click above to view in high-res

The thing about limited editions is that there are bound to be at least a few customers disappointed that they couldn't get their hands on one. That's the whole point, keeping demand higher than supply and thus ensuring a high price. So it's a little unusual to see an automaker or aftermarket supplier going back and reopening the supply lines, especially if the model in question has already been replaced. But that's exactly what British tuning house Arden has done with the AJ18.

Based on the previous-generation XK, Arden debuted this limited-edition track-inspired Jag coupe nearly ten years ago at the 1999 Frankfurt Motor Show, pegging production at just 13 units. A decade gone by, Arden has announced the availability of an additional five examples, bringing the total run up to 18 pieces. What sets the AJ18 apart from the stock XK8 is the carbon-composite aero kit, custom grilles and bumpers, narrow wing mirrors, giant rear wing and 20-inch Sportline rims hiding 370mm brake discs with 6-piston calipers mounted to a lowered Bilstein suspension.

We'd just as soon go out and buy a new XK, dynamically superior as it is to its successor in just about every way, but if you've already got a previous-generation model in your driveway and still regret missing your chance to upgrade it to the Arden AJ18, this will probably be your last chance. Probably.

  • Jaguar officially announces XKR Goodwood Special... in lime green -

2010 Jaguar XKR Goodwood Special -- Click above to enlarge

In a press release announcing the cars it would be taking to this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, Jaguar's own Mike Cross has officially confirmed the coming of the Jaguar XKR Goodwood Special. We noted before that it would be louder and faster and detailed in satin graphite, but now we find out it will get a lower ride height over 21-inch wheels and - are you ready? - "a unique Lime Green paint scheme and XKR exterior graphic" as shown above. Alrighty, then.

That hard-to-miss car will join a few more trailers of Jaguar goodies, including the 225 mph Bonneville XFR, a 1957 Long Nose D-Type, a Le Mans winning C-Type, and the one-of-a-kind Jaguar XJ13. Goodwood is just around the corner (July 3-5), and you can read all about Jaguar's plans in the press release after the jump.

  • Jaguar reveals all-new XF Supercharged model for North America -

2010 Jaguar XF Supercharged - Click above for an image gallery

When Jaguar dropped the supercharged 4.2-liter V8 XF for the 2010 model year, it left a sizable hole in its line-up between the all-new, 385 hp 5.0-liter V8 model and the 510 hp, M5-hunting XFR. But starting this October, Jaguar will fill the void with the XF Supercharged, packing an new variant of the blown 5.0-liter AJ-V8 Gen III engine putting out 470 hp and 424 lb-ft of torque - a boost of 12% over the outgoing 4.2-liter model.

In addition to the new forced-induction mill, the XF Supercharged comes standard with Jag's stellar Adaptive Dynamics suspension system and Active Differential Control, along with "Suedecloth" headliner, "Rich Oak" trim (unique to the XF Supercharged), 440W Bowers & Wilkins stereo, HD radio and heated steering wheel. Setting the new XF apart from its siblings are a set of 20-inch, five-spoke wheels, upgraded stoppers painted silver-gray and "Supercharged" badging. Pricing starts at $68,000 (including destination) and deliveries will begin this fall. Make the jump for the official release.

  • Jaguar to make a roaring lion? XKR Goodwood Special mooted -

The details haven't been disbursed yet, but one of Jaguar's chief engineers has reportedly spilled the beans on a special XKR to be shown at Goodwood. Called, fittingly, the XKR Goodwood Special, it will get more power than the standard XKR's (shown above) 500 horses, and more audible snarl than the current exhaust emits.

Because Jag is said to be reconsidering the car's brightwork treatment, the Goodwood Special will wear a satin graphite detailing package that could foreshadow a future running change (we know we could do without the metal surrounds on the car's front skirt nostrils). The car is still being finished so there's a good chance it won't be seen until just before the event, but we always look forward to a cat that scratches harder and roars louder.

  • Tata considers more Jaguar/Land Rover cuts after massive loss -

2010 Land Rover LR4 - Click above for high-res image gallery

India's Tata Motors has reported a net loss of $520 million (25.05 billion rupees) for the fiscal year ending in March of 2009. Over the same period one year earlier, Tata managed to earn 21.68 billion rupees in profit. What gives? Naturally, the global economic meltdown didn't do the automaker any favors, but the main problem can be sourced back to the poor performance of Jaguar and Land Rover, which the Indian automaker purchased from Ford last year with the help of a $3 billion bridge loan.

The fact that Jaguar Land Rover accounted for $504 million of that $520 million total loss means that more job cuts and plant shutdowns are in store for the ailing British duo. Says Tata Vice Chairman Ravi Kant:
We have sent people on sabbatical, gone for cheaper low-cost country sourcing and tight control in cash flows, and are assisting JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) for a major belt tightening.
Earlier this month, it was reported that Tata was in search of some £1 billion ($1.5B) in cash and underwriting help to pump into the JLR operations.

  • VIDEO: Jaguar waxes poetic about aluminum in new teaser -

We're pretty excited for the official unveiling of the 2010 Jaguar XJ, and judging from the teaser videos being released by Leaping Cat, Jaguar employees are more psyched than we are. The newest one goes in-depth into why the aluminum structure of the XJ is a marvel of modern engineering. Aluminum is lightweight, of course, giving the new XJ a better power-to-weight ratio than much of its competition, while also delivering class leading fuel economy and CO2 emissions. The video also points out that the XJ's aluminum structure is 85% recyclable, which will make a lot of soda cans one day.

Sure, the current generation XJ has the same aluminum structure, but it's pretty dowdy-looking on the outside and we're hoping the new XJ with its XF-inspired styling makes up for it. Follow the jump to view the newest teaser for yourself, and stay tuned to Autoblog for the XJ's official unveiling on July 9.

Filed under: Spy Photos, Sedans/Saloons, Jaguar

A Jaguar XJ mule was trapped on a ferry from Dover and became the unwitting subject of a thorough photo shoot. However, the new flagship sedan from Jag was protected by so much cladding that there isn't much we can glean from the shots except these three things: it has a beautifully crafted, nicely dished three-spoke steering wheel; the Jaguar Drive is finished in the same way as in the XF; and it has a new taillight design.

The All New XJ site also revealed that the sedan will have the "most amazing" Bowers & Wilkins audio system in the world. For more than that, we're going to have to wait until July 9, when the car is officially revealed. In the meantime, check out the spy shots by clicking the image on the right.

  • Rumormill: 2012 Jaguar sports car to get Volt-like extended-range hybrid tech? -

Filed under: Concept Cars, Convertibles, Coupes, Hybrids/Alternative, Sports/GTs, Green, Jaguar

Ratan Tata, Jaguar's owner, knows that the future of the company rests on "shiny and new" products. That's why the XE roadster was reportedly moved to the front of the line and given a 2011 release date. If the soothsayers at Motor Trend are correct, Tata also understands that cleaner engines are the future of the industry itself, because the XE could also bolster Jaguar's credentials by reportedly including the option of a Volt-like range-extending hybrid drivetrain.

The mooted gas-electric system is a conventional three-cylinder gasoline engine mated to an electric motor. It is also being suggested by MT that the concept XE may be fitted with that powerplant, but it might not make it to the production version.

If it does come to market, however, the car probably won't have any natural competition at its price point given its green credentials, with the possible exception of the Fisker Karma S. Even if the extended-range hybrid rumor fails to materialize, the coupe is likely to get variants of the company's new 5.0-liter V8 engine range, which presently offers up to 510-horsepower in supercharged form...

  • Rendered Speculation: Jaguar C-Type draws its claws -

Filed under: Convertibles, Jaguar, Rendered Speculation, Rumormill

Jaguar's owner Ratan Tata has made it clear that he wants to expand Jag's sportscar offerings beyond the scope of the current XK, and this is what the British rumormill has cooked. Dubbed the C-Type, the renderings depict a compact two-door roadster to rival the likes of Porsche's Boxster, BMW's Z4, Mercedes' SLK and Nissan's 370Z. With a lightweight aluminum chassis and powertrain options to potentially include a 235hp V6, 380hp V8 and 3.0-liter turbodiesel, the C-Type could offer exciting performance in a compact package, like Aston's Vantage, but at a fraction of the price. Although in the present climate Jaguar would do well to take things one step at a time, the report speculates that the diminutive C-Type could come in addition to a 911-rivaling E-Type successor and an R8-battling supercar. Likely? Not quite. Exciting? Most definitely. Hat tip to Mo for the news!

2010 Jaguar XJ: Click above to view the video after the jump

The top-of-the-line leaping cat was blessed with an aluminum chassis that was well ahead of its time, but the Jaguar XJ's historically derivative design left luxury customers less than impressed - if indeed they recognized it as a new model. Chief Jaguar designer Ian Callum, who hit the ball right out of the park when he designed the award winning XF, now has an opportunity to make things right with the flagship XJ. We've already seen spy photos of the XJ's interior and exterior, and everything so far points to the Jag's flagship model taking plenty of cues from the smaller, less expensive XF; not that that's a bad thing.

The 2010 Jaguar XJ is one of the most eagerly anticipated unveilings this year, but since it won't go public until July 9, you'll have to wait until we can gather some more information. After the jump is a short video of Callum discussing his coup de gras; the new XJ. We only caught two very brief, very muddled shots of the next generation of Jaguar's "Gorgeous" design philosophy, but it's still worth a look.

About 20 minutes after heading south towards the Mediterranean, traffic on our four-lane roadway stops abruptly. The bus we have just passed pulls up on our right and an officer is standing in the middle of the roadway, waving the morass of motorists through - until we reach the head of the pack. He points at us, then motions towards an unpaved turnout where a handful of squad cars are accompanied by a dozen police officers.

We pull the white, droptop XK into the dirt lot, twist the rotary shifter into Park and within seconds we're being berated by a young officer with "CADET" embroidered across his upright baseball cap. Our French is about as good as our Klingon, so after realizing we don't speak the native tongue, he snatches our documents and leaves us to stew.

A few minutes pass, at which point an older officer approaches and asks in perfect English, "Do you know why you are here?" We tepidly shake our heads as he informs us we were doing 60 km/h in a 40 zone. Our wallet recoils in horror as we remember the advice given to us earlier in the week: "The police in France are very strict about speed limits. The fine can run upwards of 1,500 euros (a little over $2,000) and it is payable on the spot." Just as thoughts of frantic phone calls, maxed-out credit cards and the atrocities that await us in a Parisian jail cell begin to flood our minds, the officer cocks his head sideways, realizes we're a pair of dimwitted Americans and simply says, "Please be more careful."

So begins our time with the foursome of Jaguar's newest offerings, and we haven't even sampled the 510-horsepower XKR and XFR yet.

  • Jaguar UK launches new police package for XF -

Filed under: Sedans/Saloons, Jaguar, Police/Emergency, UK

The long arm of the law now has a cat to stroke with Jaguar's creation of a high performance police pursuit vehicle. It hasn't been commissioned by forces yet, but is apparently under evaluation by UK authorities across the country. The model in question is the new twin-turbo XF Diesel S, a 3.0-liter unit pumping out 275 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque, while still returning 42 British mpg.

The police version XF gets a "police pack" electronics package to power equipment, the radio, and enough lights for several Heathrow runways: a roof-mounted light bar with 3600 light elements, side alley lights, blue and white strobing LEDs in the grille and blue flashing LEDs along the side of the car, along with blue and red flashing LED lights in the rear light clusters. If you ask us, this beats a Ford Crown Vic any day of the week.

BMW is known for wrapping its prototypes in funkadelic patterns to obscure new design details. And, seeing as the car above is sporting a split-kidney grille, you would think that you're staring at a BMW prototype of some sort. Maybe the next-next-gen 7 Series or something. Well, that's what they want you to think. "They" in this scenario are engineers from Jaguar who have been caught testing the next-generation XJ flagship sedan. They've gussied up their prototype with enough BMW trappings to throw us off the scent, but thankfully our spy photographers recognized this large sedan's true identity. The fake grille up front is meant only to obscure the XJ's new fascia that's heavily inspired by the smaller XF sedan. Aside from the sloping roofline and a bit of the rear end, the real tell-tale tip offs are the cat-slit headlights and outer air intakes in the lower part of the bumper, both of which look very similar to the same elements on the XF. The new XJ is scheduled to go on sale in December, so while we wait for its official debut sometime between now and then, you can compare these new revealing spy shots to the official XJ teasers released by Jaguar in April at the Shanghai Motor Show.

  • Tata looking to raise £1 billion to keep Jaguar, Land Rover going -

Filed under: Jaguar, Land Rover, Earnings/Financials, Tata

We don't know how many times through the millennia one gentleman has told another, "Be careful with her - she's beautiful, but she's expensive." We would like to know if Alan Mullaly offered that warning to Ratan Tata (above) before the latter bought Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR). As with the Blue Oval before it, Tata Motors is about to throw billions at the English luxury marques and it is looking for help doing it.

Tata wanted the British government to guarantee a £340 million loan ($515M USD) Tata received from the European Investment Board. The government refused to underwrite the entire amount, and it was written that the government additionally wanted Tata to invest up to another £400M ($605M) in JLR (on top of the £900M ($1.36B) Tata pitched in last summer) and put £50M ($76B) on the table before it would underwrite anything. The government is also said to have wanted veto power on top executive choices and labor plans.

Those talks, unsurprisingly, went nowhere. Now Tata is looking to banks for £1 billion ($1.5B) in cash and underwriting help. Citigroup is has begun the search for lenders to provide the money by September, which everyone expects to come with heavy-duty interest rates. With the state of the market and Tata's other recent purchases, 2009 is shaping up as an expensive year for the Indian company.

Jaguar releases warmed over X-type and XK range

    Sunday, June 17th, 2007

    Jaguar, Release X-type Car

Jaguar scraped together a few bucks to make several less-than-noteworthy changes to the XK, XKR and the X-type, and since they took the trouble of putting together press releases, we felt obligated to pass along the information to you.

The XK and its hotted-up big bro the XKR receive a revised rear spoiler, new 20-inch five spoke rollers, and an Alcon-developed braking setup that was only available on the Portfolio Special Edition. On the inside, owners that opted to wait a year will now get a choice of wood or aluminum inserts, piano black instrument and shifter surrounds, a bit more chrome, alloy pedals and an optional 525-watt Bowers & Wilkins audio arrangement.

As for the X-Type, the only visual change comes courtesy of new mesh grille and two new colors: Blue Prism and White Onyx. The model choices now consist of “S,” “SE,” “Sport Premium” and “Sovereign.”

For the Jaguar aficionados out there, you can read both press releases in their entirety after the jump and check out the high res galleries of the vehicles below.

    Jaguar XKR Portfolio

    Thursday, April 12th, 2007

     Jaguar XKR Portfolio

Jaguar Cars is adding even more appeal to the ‘must have’ XKR with the unveiling of the all-new special edition Portfolio model. The 4.2-litre supercharged sports car will be sold worldwide and each one will feature notable additions to the already strong specification of the XKR, which is capable of hitting an electronically controlled top speed of 155mph and can accelerate to 60mph in just 4.9 seconds (5.0 seconds for the convertible).

    Jaguar XKR Portfolio

    • New special edition XKR Portfolio offers even greater technology and luxury to customers seeking the ultimate sports coupe or convertible.
    • Unique exterior styling revisions include 20-inch polished Cremona five-spoke alloy wheels, polished aluminium side power vents and Celestial Black paint.
    • Advanced aluminium construction, 420bhp supercharged 4.2-litre V8 engine and six-speed Jaguar sequential shift transmission with paddleshift for superb dynamic performance.
    • New high-performance braking system with 400mm front discs and 350mm rear discs – the largest ever fitted to a production Jaguar.
    • Choice of new interior veneer - Engine-Spun Alloy – or elegant Satin American Walnut.
    • First production Jaguar to use new Bowers & Wilkins speaker system exclusively crafted for XKR Premium Sound system.

    Jaguar XKR Portfolio

The XKR’s already powerful sporting styling cues – an enhanced front bumper, bonnet louvres and aluminium-finish grilles and side power vents – will remain and exclusive Celestial Black exterior paint and 20-inch polished Cremona five-spoke alloy wheels add to the overall presence.

    Jaguar XKR Portfolio

The XKR’s interior represents a truly sophisticated yet driver-focussed environment thanks to class-leading ergonomics, user-friendly in-car technology and simple, clear information displays in the instrument panel and main dashboard area.

The XKR Portfolio will combine this acclaimed design and performance with Jaguar’s engineering and craftsmanship skills to take the XKR to an even higher level. Every XKR benefits from its class-leading, advanced aluminium construction, which ensures that its power is matched by a dynamic, lightweight chassis that handles supremely, rides exceptionally well and stops with surefooted reassurance time after time.

Now, to offer even greater braking ability, Jaguar’s Special Vehicles team has worked alongside leading brake manufacturer Alcon to create the largest, most powerful brakes a production Jaguar has ever carried. After extensive testing by experts at Jaguar’s specialist engineering centre (which is based next to the legendary Nurburgring race circuit in Germany), the new XKR Portfolio braking system was conceived.

400mm front brake discs – an increase of 45mm over the standard XKR – are retarded by powerful six-piston callipers, while at the rear four-piston calipers operate on 350mm discs. Innovative race-developed crescent-shaped grooves cut into the surface of the discs prevent a build-up of deposits on the brake pads and improve braking performance under extreme use.

By allowing the heat created within the system to dissipate quickly and efficiently the XKR Portfolio’s brakes produce fade-free performance whilst maintaining Jaguar renowned blend of refinement and stopping power. Unique ‘R’ branding on the front brake calipers reveals the six-piston set-up beneath.

Surrounding the XKR Portfolio’s brakes are polished 20-inch five-spoke Cremona wheels, while behind the front wheels sit all-new Power Vents which are hewn from polished aluminium and incorporate the indicator side repeater and Jaguar signature ‘ingot’. An exclusive Celestial Black exterior paint will also serve to differentiate the XKR Portfolio edition. (UK and Switzerland have a Liquid Silver paint option as well.)

A host of new additions to the interior further the luxurious look and feel of the XKR Portfolio. A unique, and quite beautiful, Engine-Spun aluminium veneer is standard on the Portfolio, while customers will also have the option of an elegant Satin American Walnut veneer. A new alloy and leather gearshift selector, soft-grab door handles, contrast stitching throughout the cabin, leather-edged mats with a Jaguar logo and distinctive Portfolio treadplates on the doorsills complete the effect.

The XKR Portfolio also marks another first for Jaguar: the first production example of its new partnership with renowned audio entertainment specialists Bowers & Wilkins. This world-leading loudspeaker manufacturer worked alongside Jaguar to create a stunning speaker system for the recent C-XF concept car, but the XKR Portfolio is the first production Jaguar to benefit from the relationship.

Taking Jaguar’s 525W Premium Audio system with Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound as a starting point, Bowers & Wilkins have crafted a signature speaker system specifically for the XKR’s cabin. High-output, low-distortion Kevlar mid-range speakers and specially designed aluminium-dome tweeters deliver superb mid-range and extended high-frequency responses.

The new Jaguar XKR Portfolio special edition is available to order from the end of March 2007.

One sleek cat: Jaguar XKR puts the ‘grand’ in grand touring

    2007 Jaguar XKR

Breathe, colleagues, breathe. It’s just a car, although an uncommonly awesome-looking car. It was strange, really, to walk out to the garage and find people gathered around the XKR in twos and threes, murmuring and bright-eyed, as if warming themselves beside some sacred campfire of automotive culture.

    2007 Jaguar XKR

Maybe the Jag is just that. Even though the car and company have next to zero in common with the ancien regime, people who wouldn’t know an XK-E from an X-ray machine somehow understand that the soigne XKR means something.

    2007 Jaguar XKR

At first, I didn’t get it. When Jaguar unveiled the redesigned XK last year — the replacement for the grand touring coupe/convertible that had been in service since 1998 — I wasn’t bowled over. The XK is obviously a well-struck and handsome design, with the long hood, dramatically swept windshield and fastback hatch (like the surprisingly practical E-Types). But the car looked like a bit of a hulk, more concerned with authority than elegance. And that face! I heard people say the car had a feline grace but to me the car looked more catfish than cat.

But vox populi cannot be denied. People absolutely fall all over this car, and I’m beginning to see their point. For one thing, the car puts the “grand’ in grand touring. The XK is significantly longer and wider than either the Porsche 911 or the Maserati GranSport, and wider even than the larger BMW M6 or Mercedes-Benz CL550. And although all of these are pretty gorgeous cars, none of them has the stunning three-quarter-rear view of the XK. From this perspective, the aluminum skin seems to flow around the car in a single, rushing hydraulic moment. Maybe the effect is less aerodynamic than Jungian: This is the shape of a coveted thing slipping through your fingers.

What about the convertible? As with the original E-Type, the gentleman’s choice is the coupe. The coupe has the finer line and the great dignity. The XK Coupe is proud; the XK Convertible, vain.

Whatever graces the 300-hp XK has, the XKR — the new, 420-hp supercharged version of the car — doubles down. Replacing the XK’s black-mesh oval grille that inevitably reminded people of the Ford Taurus (and Ford’s ownership hanging in the corporate ether), the XKR has racy upper and lower grilles filled with aluminum-finish mesh. Instead of the torpedo tube-like apertures for the fog lights in the standard car, the XKR has flush-fitted trapezoidal panels. Blade-like aluminum sashes along the fuselage are “power vents’ (a design feature that is quoted on Jag’s new concept car, the C-XF, seen in Detroit). On the back, a bold band of polished aluminum on the trunk plinth gussies up the rear view, as do the mortar-like quad exhausts.

The best detail is the near-ellipse of brightwork around the window opening, a beautiful bit of self-symmetry that restates the whole of the car.

With 120 more horsepower and 103 pound-feet more torque than the standard XK (413 pound-feet at 4,000 rpm), the XKR is a far quicker breed of cat. Sitting on top of the 4.2-liter, 32-valve, variably timed V8 is an Eaton supercharger blowing about 8 pounds of maximum boost into the cylinders. The boys at Car and Driver recorded a quarter-mile pass of 13 seconds flat, and 0-60 acceleration of 4.5 seconds. Those are huge numbers. However, Jaguar’s own estimation of 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds is more in line with my experience of the car.

In any event, these numerical absolutes don’t really do justice to the car, which is more about the profound competence than back-slamming aggression. Get the XKR pointed up the freeway onramp and roll on the throttle. It won’t disappoint. You’ll sink deep into the leather sports seat as a deep trenchant warble comes out of the quad pipes and a steely supercharger whine colors the air. What time does this train get to Waterloo station?

Like the XK, the XKR is fitted with a smart, quick-shifting six-speed automatic with sequential-shift mode. Full-power shifts are greasy-smooth and seamless. In manual mode, shifting is more aggressive (higher allowable rpm) and crisper, but generally, the sport automatic mode is plenty clever enough to go fast.

To match the XKR’s increased output and weight (3,814 pounds, 143 pounds heavier than the XK Coupe) Jag up-rated the springs as well as retuned the adaptive damping, steering and electronic stability and traction control. The front brake discs are more than an inch wider (13.98 inches) than the standard car’s. Clamping duties fall to black-painted “R’-badged brake calipers.

All these tweaks to the hardware don’t transform the car so much as raise its parametric limits. The XK’s aluminum monocoque easily handles the extra horsepower. The interior ambience is hushed and unperturbed. Unlike competitors such as the Porsche 911 and BMW M6 — which dole out suspension travel like it was the world’s rarest commodity — the XKR has a fairly limber suspension, making it more comfortable over long distances.

There’s little of the concussive edginess of those cars in the XKR. That said, there’s nothing remotely flick-able or toss-able about the XKR. It’s a grand touring car that requires commitment and forethought to drive fast. If you put it into a corner at high speed, you have to expect the car to give a little waggle as it scrunches down on its springs, trusting that the big Dunlop SP tires will hang on (and they do). Because of its weight, the XKR will pitch and heave and have trouble catching up with itself on rough pavement.

If you’re considering a high-performance variant of a luxury machine, my advice generally is, don’t: High-five-figure luxury cars already have more performance than you can legally use, so what’s with the supernumerary excess? The case is more complicated with the XK, which I think is slightly underpowered in its off-the-shelf form. Also, consider the dollar-per-hp formula. The XKR is $11,000 more than the XK, a difference that equals about $91.66 per extra horsepower. This actually is a huge bargain. A BMW 6-series coupe with 360 hp starts at $73,900, and the 500-hp M6 starts at $98,600. That comes to a whopping $176.42 per additional hp.

The other complication of the XKR has to do with the interior. The XKR’s interior decor is perfectly functional — more functional, in terms of intuitive ease, than either of the German cars’ controls — but not particularly gracious or satisfying. The Mercedes, the BMW and Maserati all have more refinement, richer materials and more artful layout in the cockpit. And these cars also have longer lists of amenities and technologies.

So where does that leave the Jaguar XKR? I suppose it comes down to something called brand equity. Some cars are better at things than others: BMWs seem to handle better; Mercedes-Benzes are elegant, smart and safe; Lexuses are impeccably crafted.

Jaguars are primarily beautiful, and people who buy them typically put beauty before how many speakers are in the car or whether there’s an air bag in the cup holder. A Jag is a value statement that says: More than anything, I want this bright piece of varnished speed in my driveway.

Jaguar XKR GT3 revealed in all its glory

Jaguar’s new XKR Coupé is being revealed to a new audience today at the Autosport International Show at the NEC, Birmingham, and in a new guise

Jaguar XKR GT3 revealed in all its glory

Buckingham-based Apex Motorsport, under the direction of Richard Lloyd, has developed the stunning XKR model for use in the FIA GT3 European Championship. It is being revealed in the ‘flesh’ for the first time to the world’s motorsport media at what is recognised to be globally one of the biggest and most successful motorsport shows.

Lloyd and Apex have enjoyed huge racing success in the past, most recently with Bentley with whom they won the 2003 24 Hours of Le Mans. “It was obvious to us that the Jaguar name was missing from the list of GT3 contenders,” said Lloyd. “We believe the new XKR has great potential for success, and Team Manager Dave Ward and the guys have been working flat out since receiving our first car at the end of September. We’ve still got a mountain to climb with roll out and first test scheduled to take place within the next five weeks and, of course, the first race of the season at Silverstone in May. The first car is sold and we have received very positive interest for another two so we’re confident there will be plenty of Jaguars in the FIA paddock and in other emerging GT3 series around the world.”

While Apex has Jaguar’s blessing to compete with the XKR GT3, this is not a factory motorsport programme and the Apex race activities are independent of Jaguar. At the time of the programme’s announcement in September, Stuart Dyble, Jaguar Board Director and Vice President, Communications and Public Affairs, Premier Automotive Group and Ford of Europe, said, “We welcome this initiative which will result in production Jaguar sportscars being seen once again on race circuits across Europe. We have just launched the all new Jaguar XKR road car, and GT3 is the natural race series in which to compete.”

The Jaguar XKR GT3, featuring a 4.2 litre V8 supercharged engine, retains the aluminium body of its production cousin, but has had modifications made in line with the regulations. Draft technical specifications are attached but the definitive specification will be revealed following the official FIA track tests, the first of which takes place at Monza on February 22/23.

The first car to be built by Apex Motorsport has already been sold to Stuart Scott, Managing Director of East Anglia’s most successful travel management company, Cambridge Business Travel. Scott, who has most recently been racing in the British GT Cup, will be driving the Jaguar in a programme of six events with a yet-to-be-named co-driver. He said of his involvement, “I feel privileged to be here at the beginning of this project. In my racing past I have always tried to do something that’s a ‘first’ or a bit different, and to take delivery of the first XKR race car is a dream come true. I’ve been aware of Richard and Apex for a long time and to now be part of such a professional team is wonderful.”

The FIA GT3 European Championship is already a very marketable racing series for teams and manufacturers, using sexy coupés that are closer to their road-car origins and therefore less expensive to build and to run. The series captured the imaginations and interest of competitors and fans alike in its inaugural 2006 season with some 40 entries, and looks set to be strengthened further with the addition of Jaguars to the starting line up. Each manufacturer is represented by up to six entries ensuring a fair distribution of honours, and the performance between the different marques is balanced by the use of success penalties. Entry is aimed at gentlemen and non professional drivers graded by the FIA via a combination of racing experience and age.

The five round Championship begins in May at Silverstone, then travels to Bucharest (ROM), Monza (I) and Brno (CZ) in Europe before finishing in Dubai in November. Some owners may also plan on entering the non Championship GT3 race within the Spa 24 Hours event in Belgium at the end of July.
