Monterey coverage continues with one of Friday's staples. Concorso Italiano has been one of Monterey's largest gatherings of primarily Italian vehicles for years. Laguna Seca Golf Ranch played the hospitable host, giving throngs of Italian-car lovers the opportunity to get up close and personal with hundreds of le belle macchine.

Lamborghini, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Lancia, DeTomaso and Ferrari, were well represented - long lines of each marque appearing almost mirage-like down the fairways of Laguna. You know those shots you've seen of exotic cars lined up outside the factory? Multiply those by ten. It is absolutely crazy. Special gatherings honored the Ferrari F40, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary of U.S. citizenship. The Italians were never really that great at dates, as the F40 was originally intended to be a 40th anniversary treat for Enzo himself to celebrate the company's 1947 birth. Unfortunately, it appeared around 1990 instead. Don't even get us started on the F50.

Concorso has hosted several smaller manufacturers over the years as well. Not just the oddball makes that few people have ever heard of, but also fledgling companies that have sometimes risen to prominence - or fallen infamously. This year, Superformance showed off the new Zagato-penned Perana Z-One. The European GT styling combined with Corvette power reminds us of the classic Italo-Amercan mashups from DeTomaso, Iso, Bizzarrini and the like. The Z-One is gorgeous, and we were blown away by its build quality. We're negotiating some seat time to give you the full rundown, but for now, check out the gallery and you'll see why Concorso Italiano has become one of the world's greatest events for lovers of Italian machinery.

Maserati Quattroporte by Novitec Tridente - Click above for high-res image gallery

Used to be - not so long ago, even - that if you wanted something exotic and sporty with four doors, your choices were largely limited to the Maserati Quattroporte. Maybe the Bentley Continental Flying Spur, if your budget and tastes veered more towards the statesmanly. But these days, buyers have more choices in the form of the Porsche Panamera, Aston Martin Rapide and even the Jaguar XJ Supercharged. And while Maserati reportedly has a pair of new QPs in the works, for those still enamored with the current model but hoping for a little extra kick, Novitec Tridente has something in store for you.

Novitec who, you ask? The Dutch tuning firm massages all manner of Italian automobiles - like the Alfa 159 and Fiat 500, for example - under its unadorned name, but may be more familiar to exotic car aficionados under the Novitec Rosso label, the division that tunes Ferrari models. A couple of years ago, the company launched a unit dedicated to tuning Maseratis, and these are its latest releases.

The upgrade package can be fitted to either the Quattroporte S or the top-of-the-line Quattroporte GT S, bolting a supercharger, intercooler, new intake manifold and fuel injectors and a remapped ECU to the 4.7-liter V8 to boost output up to 590 horsepower, a stout 160 and 150-horse boost over stock, respectively. A new, electronically adjustable sport suspension is also fitted with 21-inch modular wheels and Pirelli P Zero rubber, along with some discreet aero bits and a variety of interior upgrade options. The result? Try 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds and a 183 mph top tend. Details in the press release after the jump and photos in the high-res image gallery below.

  • Maserati's baby Quattroporte expected around 2015 -

Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Maserati, Luxury

Maserati has ambitious plans to break out of the fringe and into the mainstream. To do so, the Trident marque is going to need more than just the two models it currently holds in its stable. Fortunately, Maserati has plans in place to expand and they're beginning to come into focus.

Following earlier reports from back in April that the Modenese automaker was planning to slot a BMW 5 Series rival in below the current Quattroporte, and subsequent rumors that the QP's successor could go both all-wheel drive and more eco-friendly, come new reports on the smaller sedan's progress.

Motor Trend projects that the baby QP will arrive around 2015 with a starting price around $68,000. A flexible new platform could underpin the next Quattroporte itself, as well as the successor to the current GranTurismo. Sources also forecast that the base version of the next-gen QP will also go slightly down-market, but that the space between the two sedans in the stable will remain sufficiently delineated.

  • Mouthwatering Italian classics join the Gooding roster for Pebble Beach -

1955 Maserati A6G/54 Zagato - Click above for high-res image gallery

Pebble Beach is an octane-drenched event that never disappoints, and this year's event is shaping up to be no exception - but it will be exceptional. Already lined up for the August concours are the debuts of Morgan's new EvaGT and Ferrari's 599 roadster, with notable auction lots including the 1959 Le Mans-winning Ferrari 250 TdF and a famous 1927 Benz owned by the Marx Brothers. The latter will be part of Gooding & Company's auction, but that's far from the extent of what the venerable auction house has in store for Monterey this year.

An ex-Stirling Moss 1956 Maserati 200 SI and the Ferrari 340 America from the 1952 New York Auto Show have already been announced, but once the Pebble rolls around they'll be joined by a growing roster of drool-worthy classic Italian machinery. Among them will be a rare Zagato-bodied 1954 Fiat 8V, a stunning 1971 Lamborghini Miura S and a pristine alloy-bodied 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione, along with the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta SEFAC Hot Rod and 1955 Maserati A6G/54 Zagato pictured in the galleries below.

SEFAC, as the tifosi will tell you, stands for Scuderia Enzo Ferrari Automobili Corsa, the precursor to the modern Scuderia Ferrari, represented here by what could very well be the ultimate expression of the 250 GT racer in existence today. And that Zagato Maserati? That's the coachbuilt special which the Modenese marque chose to represent at the 1955 Turin Motor Show. In other words, these cars have mad pedigree. Read more about 'em in the press release after the jump.

  • Report: Next Maserati Quattroporte to get all-wheel drive, start-stop tech -

With Ferrari spending so much time and money talking up its hybrid, KERS, lighter weight and more efficient V8 plans, it's natural to find sister company Maserati not far back in tow. But before the Trident brand goes fully over to the Eco side, the 2012 Quattroporte will be taking the intermediate step of losing weight, increasing fuel economy and adding stop-start tech.

According to Maserati CEO Harald Wester the weight loss target is 15%, the mileage target a 25% improvement, both of which will be aided by smaller, lighter V6 and V8 engines and an eight-speed transmission. The target will be even more difficult to hit because the Q'Porte reportedly will be available with all-wheel drive, built on a platform to be shared among every high-end Fiat and Chrysler vehicle.

Unidentified Maserati GranTurismo spy shots - Click above for high-res image gallery

Not quite sure what it is that you're looking at above? Fret not, neither does anyone else... save some engineering types at Maserati, of course. Sure, we can all recognize the shape of the beautiful GranTurismo, but what's with the large rear spoiler? And, even more puzzlingly, why does this GT have twin exhaust outlets poking out high up on the rear fascia in lieu of the normal quad pipes at the corners?

Back in April, Fiat unleashed its five-year business plan, and the Italian automaker promised to "maintain and sustain" its GranTurismo. At the time, we could only assume that meant more variants, but these spy photos only serve to muddy the waters further. What's more, this machine doesn't appear to be the MC Sport shown earlier this year in Geneva. That said, we're just going to assume this is an updated GranTurismo with a slightly hotter powertrain borrowed from corporate partner Ferrari. See for yourself in our high-res image gallery below.

Arguably more than ever before, automotive marques are positioning themselves as brands and icons as much as automakers. Maserati is certainly no exception to that trend, conveying a lifestyle image to go with its GTs. To that end, the Italian automaker is teaming up with an array of fashion houses for a new collection of merchandise.

Together with the likes of Vuarnet, Suprem and Pellemoda, Maserati is displaying its latest wares - including the GranTurismo Convertible (sold overseas as the GranCabrio) - at the Pitti Uomo fashion show this month at the Fortezza da Basso in Florence. The collection includes yachting and golf apparel and accessories, a selection of which you can view in the image gallery below, along with the details of the exposition in the press release after the jump.

It may look glamorous to outsiders, but life as a Hollywood mogul can get a little monotonous. Hence, it comes as little surprise when we hear of celebrities making all manner of crazy wagers. The most memorable is arguably the one that took place in 1932 between Zeppo Marx and agent Phil Berg. Marx bet that his 1927 Mercedes-Benz S Boattail Speedster could leave Berg's Duesenberg in the dust, and the two put $10,000 on the table - a dizzying amount of cash at the time. Off they went to the dry lakes outside north Hollywood, along with more than a thousand spectators, to settle the bet. Berg's Duesey took the honors and the cash, but 78 years later, the Marx Mercedes is making headlines again.

Never having left California and still bearing its original yellow license plates, the very same Boattail Speedster is now heading to the auction block courtesy of Gooding & Company at the upcoming Pebble Beach Concours. Of course, the Merc isn't the only classic up for grabs this year. Among the other lots are a 1956 Maserati 200 SI once campaigned by Stirling Moss, which was a class winner at Amelia Island earlier this year.

A 1951 Ferrari 340 America that served as the New York Auto Show car in 1952 and has campaigned extensively in historic meets since is also among the early consignments for the event, which takes place August 14 and 15, 2010 at the Pebble Beach Equestrian Center. Details are in the press release after the jump, and high-res images of these three featured lots are in the galleries below.

Fiat's Five-Year Business Plan - Click above for high-res image gallery

It would seem that Fiat head Sergio Marchionne is nothing if not ambitious. Following the seven-hour-long marathon presentation of Chrysler's latest business plan back in November of 2009, the giant Italian automaking alliance has just released its own five-year business plan, which includes Fiat, Maserati and Ferrari in addition to announcing the long-awaited return of the Alfa Romeo brand to the United States as a full-range automaker.

We'll start with Ferrari... for obvious reasons. Kicking off a series of six new models will be a replacement for the four-seat 612 Scaglietti, which is destined to add a hybrid powertrain to its impressive V12 engine. Next up is a convertible version of the new 458 Italia sometime next year, and later another 458-based model that will be much more track focused, like the 430 Scuderia.

Staying with the Prancing Horse lineup, we should see a new range-topping Ferrari to take the mantle from the discontinued Enzo hypercar, very likely to see an engine utilizing forced induction along with a lightweight platform. The 599 GTB will get a replacement as well, and the recently released California will see itself updated and granted an M designation.

Like what you're hearing so far? There's plenty more where that came from, make the jump for the rest of the goods.

If you've had trouble figuring out if the Maserati Quattroporte was a closer rival to the BMW M5 or the 7 Series, the latest news from Modena ought to help. As part of the Fiat Group's comprehensive five-year plan - which already includes several new Alfa Romeos and no fewer than six new Ferraris - Maserati has revealed plans to build a new sub-Quattroporte sedan.

Targeting the likes of the M5, the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and the Audi RS6, a new sedan is set to slot in below the existing Quattrporte in both size and price. Reports place the entry price for the new four-door at at less than €55,000 ($74k), significantly less than the $120k starting price for the current Quattroporte.

In addition, plans are also underway for a new full-size Quattroporte, giving buyers in the market for an exotic Italian super-saloon twice the variety to choose from. Expect the next-generation QP, then, to go slightly farther up-market to make way for its upcoming kid brother.

While GT1 cars have faded away from the American Le Mans Series, they're still running strong in other parts of the world. The 2010 FIA GT1 World Championship kicks off a 10-race series this weekend in Abu Dhabi with two dozen cars signed up, including a quartet of Maserati MC12s. The Maseratis are the defending GT1 champions and this year's new series will see them challenged by Ford GTs, Nissan GT-Rs, Lamborghini Murcielagos, Aston Martin DB9s and ex-works Chevy Corvettes.

The format for this year's events has been changed from a single two-hour race to a pair of one-hour sprints. Four events will be held outside Europe, including this weekend's races and December's season finale in Argentina.

1960 Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage - Click above for high-res image gallery

While perhaps not as well known or instantly recognizable as the Ferrari 250 TR or the Jaguar D-Type, the Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage is one of great racecars in that same era. Named for its intricate tubular space frame, the Birdcage was built by Maserati as a privateer racecar. With a weight of just over 1300 pounds and 250 horsepower from the 2.9-liter inline four, the little Maserati proved to be a force to be reckoned with on the racetrack. The car's most famous wins include victories at the 1960 and 1961 at the Nurburgring 1000km race.

With just 17 built, the Tipo 61 Birdcage is a rare and desirable collector car, and it's big news when one comes up for sale. RM Auctions, however, has announced that one will be offered at their upcoming Monaco auction next month, and prominent car collectors are sure to take note. The car, chassis #2470, was originally raced in the United States throughout the 1960s with great success before being sold to a European owner in the 1970s. The current owner purchased the car in 2004 and has competed in several vintage racing events since. According to RM, this particular Birdcage is one of the most original in existence and even comes with a spare racing engine in addition to the original motor. The estimated price? €2,400,000 to €2,600,000. Hit the jump for more details on the Tipo 61 Birdcage and a detailed history of the particular example up for sale courtesy of RM.

Maserati has undergone repeated change-ups in its senior management over the past couple of years, both in Modena, where the automaker is based, and in New Jersey, seat of its North American headquarters. In it's latest announcement, the company's North American chief executive has been named as commercial director for the parent company as well.

Mark McNabb was appointed CEO of Maserati North America less than a year ago. He joined the company with little over a year's experience at General Motors, running the Cadillac, Saab and Hummer brands, after having held senior positions at Nissan/Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz.

In his new capacity as commercial director for Maserati SpA, McNabb will replace Raffaele Fusilli (who is leaving the company), report to Harald J. Wester and - in typical Fiat-empire executive style - continue holding his parallel role as chief of the North American operation as well. Press release after the jump.

Fernando Alonso with his new Maserati GranCabrio - Click above for high-res image gallery

What do Formula One drivers drive in their downtime? Well, when you're a two-time world champion like Fernando Alonso, you get to drive pretty much whatever you want. That is, assuming the team you're driving for isn't owned by a specific automaker. Then you'll need to drive whatever the provide you with. And in Alonso's case, notwithstanding his solo 2001 debut season with Minardi-Cosworth, he's pretty much only driven for automaker-owned teams: Renault, McLaren-Mercedes, then back to Renault and now Ferrari.

While at Renault, Alonso drove a Megane RS that was later offered for sale on eBay. When he moved to McLaren, he got his finely-honed hands on an SLR 722. Now that he's at Ferrari, you'd expect him to be driving a new 458 Italia or a 599 GTB Fiorano, right? Almost, but not quite.

Ferrari's sister company Maserati has announced that Alonso has acquired a new GranCabrio - to be sold Stateside as the GranTurismo Convertible, lest we be confused. The Spanish driver - who's already off to a great start, having won his first race with the team to which everyone said he always belonged - picked one out in (very) dark gray with a two-tone beige and bordeaux interior with a matching canvas roof. And if you think about it, his selection makes sense: if you're driving a high-strung performance machine for work, wouldn't you want to unwind in something a little more relaxed? Press release after the jump, photos in the galleries below.

  • Maserati to follow Ferrari down path of hybrid sportscars? -

Filed under: Hybrid, Performance, Maserati, Rumormill, Luxury

What's the world coming to when two of Italy's most storied supercar manufacturers - we're talking Ferrari and Lamborghini here, in case you couldn't tell - are planning to launch hybrid automobiles? Well, actually that'd be three of Italy's most storied automakers, now that rumors of just such a Maserati are making the rounds on the Interwebs.

We'd agree with the boys at Inside Line when they suggest that Maserati will likely borrow hybrid technology from fellow Fiat-owned Ferrari, especially since the two business units already share a number of drivetrain components. If that's the case, the three-pointed Trident brand could potentially get a version of the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS for short) that Ferrari showed off on its 599 HY-KERS earlier this week at the Geneva Motor Show.

Word has it that Maserati is also joining Ferrari in its quest to shed a few unwanted pounds on its automobiles, which will have dual benefits for both brands - namely, improvements in both performance and fuel efficiency. Now there's a win-win scenario if we've ever heard one.

The new Maserati GranTurismo, styled by Pininfarina, will make its worldwide debut at the Geneva Motorshow.

The Maserati GranTurismo is a muscular and sporty car, that can be enjoyed every day and at the same time is engaging for the driver. Its excellent handling and sportiveness make it a point of reference in its category. The Maserati GranTurismo is built with particular attention to comfort, choice of materials and details and with enough room for four people, as only Maserati can do.

    2007 Maserati Granturismo

The new Maserati GranTurismo is a high-performance sports car, exciting to drive with a 4.2 litre V8 engine, delivering 405 HP, and a weight distribution of 49% at the front and 51% at the rear. It is fitted with an automatic gearbox and equipped with an adaptive control system which adjusts the gear-shifting mode to the driving style and the driving conditions.

Maserati’s tradition of the Gran Turismo concept dates back to 1947 when the Trident Company, following its clients’ demand, unveiled at the Geneva Motorshow its first Gran Turismo, the A6, designed by the great Pinin Farina. It was the first Maserati road car and was produced in 58 units. The car was acclaimed by the automotive press for its advanced technical content and for its avant-garde style solutions.

The new model name – Maserati GranTurismo – is not incidental. Once again, the partnership between Maserati and Pininfarina gives birth to a car that is able to generate emotions and sets itself apart from competitors, due to the technique with which it is built and its unique style.

The new Maserati GranTurismo represents a further step towards the completion of the Trident product range, following the worldwide launch of the Quattroporte Automatic at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
