Mercury is two months away from execution, leaving the brand's 1,700 dealers in a pretty tough spot. Essentially, they've got three choices: Agree to Ford's terms and walk away, negotiate and walk away, or pick a legal fight with The Blue Oval. Automotive News reports that about 1,000 dealers still haven't signed FoMoCo's compensation agreement and some of those dealers reportedly stand to lose millions of dollars in the deal.
Dealer lawyers claim that compensation has ranged from between $100,000 and $800,000, depending on a number of factors, including the dealer's dependence on Mercury sales and the average amount of vehicles sold over a three year period. A princely sum, sure, but it won't help some of the dealers who count on Mercury for 50 percent of sales or more. AN reports that Ford acknowledges that some dealers are in markets that cannot support a Lincoln-only store, but the company claims to be working with dealers to get them to sell Fords or sell the remaining Lincoln store to an existing Ford dealer.
Ford will stop producing Mercury-branded vehicles in early October, and while some dealers are picking up as many vehicles as possible, others have stopped ordering vehicles altogether. And until they sell out of their Mercury stock, Ford won't cut dealers a compensation check.

2003 Mercury Messenger Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery
"Mercury is a brand sending a message that modern design will lead its rejuvenation. Mercury is returning to its roots as a design leader introducing the Messenger concept, a distinctive and energetic high-performance two-seat sports coupe." So said Ford's former interplanetary brand when it introduced the Mercury Messenger at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Needless to say, that hoped-for rejuvenation never actually panned out.
As much as we'd like to say that Ford spent a few hundred million giving Mercury a much-needed halo car instead of shuttering the brand entirely, it didn't happen and the reality is that the eight generation of the Mercury Cougar went on to be the last non-Ford-based automobile ever to roll off the showroom floor. Sad, no?
Perhaps all is not lost, however. According to Automotive Traveler, the 2003 Mercury Messenger Concept is about to go under the gavel at the RM Auction during the festivities at Pebble Beach on August 13 and 14. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Because the car was nothing more than a styling exercise, there's no drivetrain in the Messenger... but we'd like to think that some willing participant will find a way to make it all go down the road with a brand spankin' new 5.0-liter V8 underhood.

In life, Mercury was an under-funded brand mainly composed of waterfall grilles stapled to bone-stock Ford models. In death, however, Mercury apparently gets to see some of the money it always dreamed of having when it was alive. According to Automotive News, Ford CFO Lewis Booth claims that shutting down Mercury before the end of this year will cost the Oval roughly $500 million overall. Booth says Ford already took a $247 million charge in the first half of 2010 to cover the neglected marque's mercy killing.
The lion's share of the money being spent will go toward buying out 700 of the 1,700 Mercury dealers across the United States. Back in June, we told you about a package that Ford was presenting to dealers who sign a termination agreement. The reported buyout totaled as much as $200,000 per dealership. (Actual dollar amounts for individual dealers were based on the number of vehicles they sold over a three-year period; more cars moved meant more FoMoCo cash received.)
Would a half-billion invested in updated Mercury product instead of a cash-lined casket have made a difference? Mercury's sales numbers (or lack thereof) suggest that few car shoppers would have even noticed. Ditching Mercury to concentrate on bread-and-butter Ford has seemed like a no-brainer for years. More importantly, Lincoln, which hasn't exactly lit up the monthly By the Numbers reports of late, should only benefit from the much-needed infusion of resources that were previously being wasted keeping Mercury afloat.

If Automotive News is correct - and they usually are - it looks like Mercury won't make it to Thanksgiving this year. Heck, they won't even make it through Halloween according to a new report. AN is saying that three dealers have come with forward with news of the automaker's plans. What they're saying is that the 71-year-old brand will start winding down production at the end of September. The ancient Grand Marquis gets the axe on Sept. 30, the Mountaineer on Oct. 1, the Milan on Oct. 2, and the Mariner on Oct. 3.
Since announcing the closure of the Mercury division on June 2, Ford hasn't given any firm dates on when any action would be taken. Dealers did submit their final factory orders last month and those orders will be filled and delivered to dealerships in about 30 days. After that, it's all dealer trades if a particular establishment needs more cars or SUVs. All 1,712 Mercury dealerships carry at least one other brand, so it doesn't necessarily mean that they will close, but some are certainly going to get out of the game. We'll be sure to hasten any message we get from Ford to you as more news becomes available.

1986 Mercury Capri RS 5.0 - Click above for high-res image gallery
With the Mercury brand set to be confined to the dustbin of history in the next few months, is it worth considering investing in a classic example? We're certainly not going tell you how to spend your money, but today's eBay find might be worthy of consideration. Or not.
Over the course of three decades, the soon-to-be-defunct brand offered three distinctly different versions of the Capri. The original was a compact rear-wheel-drive coupe designed and built in Germany while the last was a Mazda 323-based convertible from Australia.
The second generation example being offered for sale is likely the cleanest, lowest mileage Fox-body car remaining on the planet. Why someone would preserve a 1986 Capri RS 5.0 with only 2,000 miles is a bit of a mystery, but there it is nonetheless. The RS was a mildly restyled version of the Mustang GT and arguably more attractive than the Ford. 1986 was both the first year for the new 200 horsepower fuel-injected 5.0-liter V8 and the last year of production for the Fox-body Capri.
When the Mustang got a refresh for 1987, the Capri was left on the cutting room floor.

2010 Insurance Institute For Highway Safety rollover tests - click above for high-res images
Perish the thought, haters! The above Lincoln MKT is getting its roof caved in not on aesthetic grounds, but rather to test its ability to survive a rollover accident. If you haven't guessed by now, the MKT did so well in the roof-crush test that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) handed parent company Ford a much coveted Top Safety Pick award. Actually, the IIHS handed FoMoCo a hefty total of five rollover-related Top Safety Pick awards. However we should note that one of the Ford products earning top marks is in fact the soon to be extinct Mercury Millan, so really Ford only nabbed four - but who's counting? Other good-to-rollover-in Ford products include the Flex, Fusion and Lincoln MKZ.
Speaking of thick-sculled corporate cousins, Audi and Volkswagen were handed a couple of Top Safety Picks, too. The 2010 Audi A4 and Q5 as well as the Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen all earned top marks from the IIHS. As far as the Jetta goes, that's just one more reason to choose wagon over sedan. Finally, the new 2010 Hyundai Tucson gets the coveted TSP, and having recently driven the overly-stiff compact CUV, we're not at all surprised that its roof holds up to crushing. To get the dirt on the IIHS's methodology/read the press release, make the jump.

var Mercury_Infographic'; We weren't shocked last week when Ford announced that production of Mercury vehicles would end by the latter part of this year. We were relieved. Most of us on the Autoblog team aren't old enough to remember a time when Mercury was a respected brand with a unique identity. It's been nothing more than a line-up of rebadged Ford models since 2002 when the Villager minivan and Cougar coupe, neither of which had a Ford-branded counterpart, ended production.
And so, when we heard that Ford was pulling the plug on Mercury, we gave our infographic designers the task of capturing the brand's downfall in one fell swoop. Turned out to be a pretty easy task. Check out The Downfall of Mercury infographic after the jump.

Mid-Eighties Mercury Grand Marquis - Click above for high-res image gallery
Unfortunately for the Mercury brand, last week's surprise announcement that it would now be eligible for the Ypsilanti Orphan Car Show coincided with severe storms that rolled through southeast Michigan just 12 hours before the festivities were set to begin. The flooding of Riverside Park caused the cancellation of the official show, but a few dozen diehards gathered in the parking lot behind nearby Miller Motors anyway, including one lone mid-1980s vintage Grand Marquis.
Sadly, while this rust-free Grand Marquis is in surprisingly good condition, it is not one of the more inspired examples of the brand. It's a start, however, and hopefully the 2011 show will take place as planned with more representatives including some first generation Cougars in attendance. At least three other brands are now eligible as well including Saturn, Hummer and Pontiac. We will be looking forward to seeing some GTOs and Trans Ams mixing it up with the H1s, L-Series and, of course, the traditional Hudsons, Kaisers, Packards and MGs as well.

Ford provided a serious jolt to its brands last week when it announced that Mercury was taking a permanent catnap in the Fall of 2010. Even though Mercury has been a shell of a brand for decades, the news came as a bit of a shock - a shock that Canadian Ford dealers felt way back in 1999, when Mercury sales were far healthier than they are today.
As Ward's Automotive points out, the Blue Oval decided to cut off Mercury in Canada before the turn of the century, and over 100 dealers promptly filed a class-action lawsuit. Ford settled the suit for $48 million, and 80 retail outlets took their portion of the money and closed their doors for good. The remaining dealerships partnered with existing Ford stores.
The situation could be a bit different this time around, as Ford is providing what it calls a "fair and reasonable" compensation package for its dealers. Ford claims that it intends to expand the Lincoln lineup to help make up for lost volume.

Ford is getting out of the Mercury business in a big, fat hurry, and that means no 2011 models, no more Jill Wagoner commercials and cash compensation for the 1,700+ dealers who sell Ford's long-abused step-brand. Automotive News quotes unnamed sources who say dealers will receive up to $200,000 to stop selling Mercury cars and crossovers, along with money for any new service parts they have lying around.
Ford sales boss Ken Czubay tells AN that the company has worked out a formula for compensation that calculates the three-year average of Mercury vehicles sold at a dealership as a percentage of overall Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sales. The formula also calculates the cost for dealer signage and parts. An AN source claims that dealers who sell zero to 25 percent Mercury products receive $1,500 per unit retailed annually. The number shoots up to $1,650 per unit at 26 to 50 percent of sales and $2,000 for dealers at 51 to 75 percent. The dealer repayment program tops out at $2,500 for dealers who averaged a high 76 to 100 percent Mercury sales over the past three years. Dealers will also get 100 percent of their money back for Mercury parts purchased, and the dealers get to keep those parts free and clear.
Ford President Mark Fields called the dealer payoff "reasonable and fair," adding that it is "beyond what the franchise agreement states. It is beyond what state law states. It's well beyond what other competitors have done in the marketplace."
Some dealers, of course, say the payment is far too small to cover their investments in the Mercury brand. One dealer, who didn't want to be identified, reportedly told AN that he would be losing money even if Ford gave him $500,000.

It's a question few are asking the day after Ford announced that Mercury - named after the "messenger of the gods" in Roman mythology - would wind down production after 70 years of business. Why? Mercury lost its way so long ago that being shuttered at some point was a foregone conclusion. The only question was when. And now we have the answer.
But that doesn't answer why Ford chose June 2, 2010 as the day to announce the death of Mercury. What's so special about this year and this time in the auto industry that made Ford pull the trigger? Follow the jump to find out.Continue reading Why did Ford choose to kill Mercury now?

Farrah Fawcett, a Mercury Cougar and a real, live Cougar - Click above to watch the videos after the break
An automobile manufacturer doesn't survive for 70 years without producing its fair share of television commercials. In fact, Ford's Mercury division has been around since well before the television was a common item to see in American living rooms. As such, there is a plethora of past and present advertisements available on YouTube from which we decided to assemble a video homage to the soon-to-be-departed interplanetary marque.
Some of our personal favorites include those that recite the long-lost "Ride with the cat!" tagline that we presume was tied to the brand's popular Cougar model before being adopted across the line. Then there's the classic Farrah Fawcett spot or two where she has multiple perfect hairstyles and the car has "glove-soft vinyl."
Speaking of the late actress, did we mention that we think we now know how the term Cougar came to depict an attractive older woman looking for guys? They are all over Mercury Cougar commercials from the 1970s and '80s.
In conclusion, we had to put Jill Wagner on our list (and so we did, twice), and we couldn't possibly overlook the 1971 Marquis that apparently rode better than both a contemporary $16,000 limo and an exotic European luxury sedan. Blind taste ride test for the win! See a slew of dated Mercury commercials after the break.Continue reading Video Homage: Best Mercury Commercials Of All Time

Mercury: 1939-2010 - Click above to see the Five Best and Worst Mercury Models of All Time after the jump
Mercury could'a been a contenda'. In fact, there was a time - long, long ago - when Mercury was a brand to be reckoned with. As far as we're concerned, Mercury hit its zenith in the early 1970s, as you'll see in our image galleries below.
var he_Best_of_Times_it_was_the_Worst_of_Times'; First launched way back in 1939 by none other than Edsel Ford himself, Mercury was initially intended to offer a slightly upmarket option to those for whom the traditional Ford badge was too plebian.
By 1945, Mercury was in full swing and the brand was merged in with the Lincoln division so it could further differentiate itself from Ford, from which the automaker had historically gleaned its platforms. And therein lies the rub... Mercury vehicles have nearly always been too closely tied to their Ford stablemates, with a few notable exceptions.
As such, unlike the recent death of Pontiac, which was met with wails and great gnashing of teeth from brand loyalists, we doubt the shuttering of the Mercury brand will be met with a similar well of tears.
In order to illustrate this point, follow along as we jolt the memory banks with a look back on the both Mercury's Best of Times and the Worst of Times. Hit the jump to see the Five Best Mercurys of All Time, followed by a reminder of how Mercury got itself into its current plight with the Five Worst Mercury Rebadges of All Time.

This was bound to happen sooner or later. Over the last ten years, Mercury's sales numbers have plummeted, and currently, the brand only accounts for 0.8 percent of Ford Motor Company's overall market share. In a press conference this afternoon with Mark Fields, Ford's president of the Americas, and Derrick Kuzak, group vice president of product development, the automaker has officially announced that Mercury will be discontinued in the fourth quarter of this year.
With all of the forward momentum that Ford has been experiencing over the past few years, no brand-specific models were introduced to the Mercury lineup. What's more, the vast majority of recent Mercury purchases were made through discounts offered to retirees, friends and family. Mercury's dealer network (coupled with the Lincoln brand) is currently in the process of being notified about Ford's decision, and owners are reassured that existing Mercury products can still be serviced at any Ford or (newly standalone) Lincoln dealer.
But it isn't all bad news down in Dearborn - Ford is using Mercury's demise as a better reason to seriously beef up the Lincoln brand. Including the 2011 MKZ Hybrid and refreshed 2011 MKX, Ford is expanding the Lincoln lineup with the addition of seven all-new or wholly refreshed vehicles, including the brand's first-ever C-segment vehicle, possibly related to the C Concept that we saw at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.
Furthermore, Lincoln will be offering EcoBoost powertrains across the entire lineup, including the next-generation Navigator full-size SUV. Ford is committed to making Lincoln substantially more prosperous in America, saying that the brand will house more useful features and technology than any other competitor, as well as offering the most fuel-efficient lineup of luxury vehicles.
For full details about Mercury's demise and Lincoln's expansion, follow the jump to read Ford's official press release.
